Back in the eary 1920's in the golden days of the silver screen Adolph Zukor, then head of paramount, helped to fashion the Studio System, or as it was more well known: "The Dream Factory".

His system would rule the way films were made for the next four decades. The studios were miniature cities and it was well said of MGM that it was possible to exist solely inside the walls of the lot. Eeverything you could possibly need was contained within this micro-nation.

Behind the large sound stages existed a maze of workshops and facilities, large prop and costume houses took up the outskirts, and then past the backlots? Huge set storage hangers and vehicle shops.

It was quite common to walk from one end of the studio to the other and past through several time zones and countries. On Stage One would be the latest Cavalier by night adventure, rescuing a damsel from a French Château, whilst in the huge tanks Captain Blackbeard was setting off to raid another English vessel, whilst in the backlot the saloon doors have swung open on to a gunfight at the OK Coral.

It is, however an age that belongs truly in the past and alongside the world of old sepia images.

The Modern Film industry is a ever changing landscape, and with the ever increasing growth in digital effects and links with the games industry - which can’t be ignored - the coming years are going see another change in which way films are made.
